To this day when I spot a tamarack, I have to stop and marvel at those tiny seeds! I’m excited to get to know its local cousin, the western Larch. Equally dramatic are its seed cones, the smallest of any larch and they resemble the look of roses. From afar I thought it was dying, but I quickly learned that its green needles turn a showy yellow in the fall right before falling to the ground as winter approaches. This tree stopped me in my tracks and begged the question “what are you?” the first time I saw it in my home state of Michigan. We’re excited for the experience, perspective, and enthusiasm she’s bringing to the position and program! Read more about Daria below.įavorite Tree: Tamarack (Larix laricina).
